Dan Haggerty

Actor Dan Haggerty is well-known for his work in the films Big Stan (2007), Elves (1989), and Abducted (1986). In 1974’s The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, he was able to capture the hearts of millions of nature-loving moviegoers with his depiction of John Grizzly Adams.

A Brief History Of Dan Haggerty

On November 19, 1942, in Los Angeles, California, Daniel Francis Haggerty was born. Other websites, however, assert that he was born in Pound, Wisconsin. He was the son of Ruth Elaine Leonhardt and Donald Pual Haggerty, a film technicians’ union official. When Haggerty was three years old, his parents split, but they remained involved in his childhood.

Dan’s parents wanted him to become a priest, so they enrolled him in a Franciscan seminary in Culver City, California. Haggerty, however, had other ideas and declined to pursue a career as a priest. His father also sent him to military school, but the misbehaving Haggerty frequently eluded capture.

The scruffy-bearded man Dan Haggerty spent his formative years working as a livestock handler on a ranch in the San Fernando Valley. In addition, he had earlier careers as an ironworker and a leather craftsman.

Haggerty met some movie producers while working on the ranch, and as a result, he soon appeared in films as an animal handler. In the 1966 TV series Tarzan, he received distinctions for his training as a stuntman.

Haggerty received his first acting job, albeit a nonspeaking one, in Muscle Beach Party because of his experience dealing with animals and his strong build. He later made an appearance in Girl Happy in 1974.

Additionally, he made appearances in a number of motorcycle films, including Easy Rider, Angels Die Hard, and others. In the film When the North Wind Blows, he demonstrated his prowess as an animal trainer by working with white tigers, a wild boar, and wolverines.

After that, Haggerty was given the chance to appear in The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, a tremendous box office success that catapulted him to fame. Following the release of this film, he played the character of Grizzly Adams again in the sequels Grizzly Adams, Grizzly Mountain, and Escape to Grizzly Mountain.

In the same year that he formalized his divorce from Rooker, he wed Samantha Hilton. He had a daughter named Megan, two sons named Cody and Dylan, and a second wife.

Haggerty lost his wife Samantha in a cycling accident on August 10, 2008. He remained a single guy until his death and never remarried after that.

Death

In a serious accident in 1977, Haggerty caught fire and suffered third-degree burns, but he managed to survive. He had another terrifying motorcycle accident in 1991, which resulted in him falling into a coma. Also, he shattered his pelvis and needed 200 stitches to repair a wound on his forehead. He also got through that.

Despite twice escaping death, he developed cancer. After undergoing back surgery in August 2015, Haggerty received a spinal cancer diagnosis. He succumbed to the illness in Burbank, California, in January 2016.
