In January 2018, he was part of a scandal involving sexual harassment at a charity evening at the President’s Club. He refused to answer journalists’ questions about the event.
At the World Retail Congress event in May 2018, Steiner stated, “we think that putting the strengths of Kroger together with the strengths of Ocado… will mean that they should become the number one player in ecommerce in the US.” Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen, who joined Steiner on stage at the event, agreed, saying the partnership between the two companies is “like a marriage” in which “neither party can get to where it needs to be without the other.”
In February 2017, he received £1.2 million in Ocado shares as part of an incentive scheme.
Steiner was employed by Goldman Sachs as a bond trader in London, New York and Hong Kong for eight years, before co-founding Ocado in 2000 with Jonathan Faiman and Jason Gissing.
