Perez dubbed the “Queen of Tejano Music,” was an American singer, model, and actress who rose to prominence as one of the most well-known Mexican-American entertainers of the late twentieth century. Saldvar, her friend and former manager, shot and killed her when she was 23 years old. Saldivar was given a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 30 years, on March 30, 2025.
When was she murdered?
Yolanda was a singer, composer, and model from the United States. Selena’s family discovered in Spring 1995 that Saldivar, the head of the fan club and boutique, had been embezzling money from both her fan club and stores.
On March 31, 1995, Selena traveled to a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi to meet Yolanda Saldivar. Saldivar had been reluctant to hand over the financial records, so the singer went to get them. However, Saldivar postponed the handover of the documents, claiming she had been assaulted in Mexico.
When the singer learned of Yolanda’s tragedy, he took her to a neighboring hospital, where physicians discovered no evidence of sexual abuse on her. They then returned to the motel, where Selena demanded the documents once more. Saldivar drew a.38 Taurus Model 85 handgun from her purse and pointed it at the singer at that point.
Aghast Saldivar shot Selena in the back, damaging an artery, as she attempted to flee the scene. The singer continued running to the lobby for assistance, but she collapsed on the floor. A clerk at the motel dialed 911, and the singer was sent to the hospital, where she died just after one o’clock that afternoon.
Saldivar ultimately revealed the motive for the murder nearly 22 years after the incident. According to Latina.com, Saldivar informed them she killed Selena in order to avoid paying the approximately $200k she took while running the apparel stores and the Selena fan club.
During the interview, Saldivar also reported that Selena was pregnant with her then-husband Chris Perez at the time of her death, although Perez refuted this.
Trial And Life Behind Bars

The proceedings were originally scheduled to take place in Corpus Christi, Texas, but they were moved to Houston because Saldivar’s lawyers said she would never receive a fair trial in Selena’s birthplace.
The defense counsel said the shooting was unintentional, but the prosecutors argued it was premeditated since Saldivar, a qualified nurse, did not attempt to help Selena or phone 911.
Furthermore, when the defendant claimed the revolver inadvertently fired, the prosecutors countered that the revolver, which required 11 pounds of pressure to pull the trigger, could only be fired intentionally.
After three hours of deliberation, jurors found Saldivar guilty of first-degree murder on October 23, 1995. Saldivar was sentenced to life in prison on October 26, the highest penalty permitted in Texas at the time, with a thirty-year parole potential.
Yolanda Saldivar is currently serving her life sentence at Gatesville’s Mountain View Unit.
